Goals help set direction, but day-to-day obsession with outcomes can make a person reactive and inconsistent. A better standard is a process that is rationally tied to the goal, executed faithfully, reviewed at appropriate intervals, and adjusted when the evidence calls for it. Scale weight, motivation, mood, and performance all fluctuate. A sound process gives those fluctuations context and keeps attention on the actions most likely to create the desired result over time.
